How much mulch do I need? A simple guide for Northeast Ohio yards
The most common mulching question we get around Strongsville isn’t about color or type — it’s “how much do I actually need?” Order too little and you’re making a second trip. Order too much and you’re paying to haul away a pile. Here’s the simple math we use on every estimate.
The 3-step formula
1) Measure each bed’s length times width to get square feet. 2) Decide on depth — 2 inches for a top-up, 3 inches for fresh beds. 3) Divide square feet by 160 (for 2 inches) or by 108 (for 3 inches). That’s how many cubic yards you need. Example: a 500-square-foot bed at 3 inches deep needs about 4.5 yards.
Yards vs. bags
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet — that’s about 13 to 14 of the 2-cubic-foot bags you see at the store. Once you’re past 2 yards, bulk mulch delivered by the yard is almost always cheaper than bags, and you skip the plastic waste and the car trips. Most Strongsville-area homes land between 3 and 10 yards.
Don’t forget what’s already there
If your beds already have mulch from last year, you usually only need a 1-inch top-up to refresh the color — not a full 3 inches. Piling new mulch on old year after year is how beds end up over-mulched, which suffocates roots. A good crew will rake and check depth before quoting.
The mistakes that waste money
Guessing bed size instead of measuring, going deeper than 3 inches, and piling mulch against tree trunks (the “mulch volcano” that slowly kills trees). Keep mulch a few inches back from every trunk and stem, and cap total depth at 3 inches.
Fall mulching counts too
Most people think of mulch as a spring job, but a fall top-up insulates roots through an Ohio winter and means one less thing on the spring list. October and early November are great times to do it.
