When to mulch in Northeast Ohio (and how much you actually need)
If you mulch too early, you trap cold in the soil and slow your plants down. Too late, and the weeds beat you to it. In Northeast Ohio, the sweet spot is usually mid-April through May — once the soil has warmed up and before summer weeds get established.
How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches is right for most beds. More than that suffocates roots and invites rot; less than that and weeds push through by June. If your beds already have old mulch, you often only need a one-inch top-up — not a full re-mulch. A good crew will tell you which you need.
Edge first, mulch second
A fresh, deep bed edge does two things: it gives the mulch a clean line to sit against, and it keeps grass from creeping into the bed. It’s the single cheapest thing that makes a yard look professionally done.
The mulch volcano mistake
Never pile mulch against tree trunks or shrub stems — the ‘mulch volcano’ traps moisture against the bark and slowly kills the plant. Keep mulch a few inches back from every trunk and stem.
What it costs
Mulch is usually priced per yard installed. Most Strongsville-area homes need somewhere between 3 and 10 yards depending on bed size. The honest way to quote it is to measure your beds first — which is exactly what we do on a free estimate.
